Fur Farms: Animal Suffering

Publicado el Martes, Octubre 27, 2009 en ARTICULOS EN INGLES

Do you have any idea what goes on at a fur farm? Do you care about the lives that were tortured and killed just to be wrapped around you? Would it be any different wearing your beloved dog or cat?

Usually, people who buy fur apparel justify their purchase by claiming the coat, vest, or hat came from animals that were killed in a controlled environment. Adding to their justification, many suggest fur farms are better than allowing animals to suffer days in the steel jaws of trapping devices. fur coat

However, there is absolutely nothing humane about taking the life of any living thing. Fur farms are nothing more than a place where animals are tortured and slaughtered for the wealthy peoples enjoyment.

More than 31 million animals are killed on fur farms every year. Animals included in this slaughter are minks, chinchillas, sable, raccoon dogs, lynx, rabbits, and bobcats. Minks are most popular, and approximately twenty-six million (26,000,000) are killed every year. Fox rank second with 4.5 million slaughters.

Fur farms keep mink in cages averaging about 10” wide by 24” long, which is not only uncomfortable, but barely big enough for the animal to turn around, not to mention walk. Animals forced to survive in these cramped conditions often develop stomach ulcers and enlarged adrenal glands, which are signs of chronic stress. Fur farms are not readily willing to expose their inhumane facilities or treatment of these animals. fur coat

Tail biting or self-mutilation is common by mink, and reduces the value of the animal’s fur pelt. Most mink are killed once their winter coat has reached its prime. Large pens would reduce self-mutilation, but fur farmers are unwilling to provide any comforts or add to their overhead costs. Instead, they choose to cram many animals into small spaces and ignore self-mutilation.

Minks are semi-aquatic animals that swim and hunt in water, but the ones born on a fur farm will not have that option. Many farmed mink die from suffocating heat and diseases during summer months.

Mink can be gassed or violently injected with poison, but it’s most common to break their necks to kill them. Undercover investigations found that many minks are killed with weed killers or asphyxiated. No consideration of compassion is shown to these animals. Animals have breathe, have emotions and feelings, and beating hearts, to which many people have decided to ignore.

Considering the development of faux fur material with identical feel of a natural fur, why must innocent animals, without a voice or choice, continue to be exploited and subjected to excruciating torture, and terrifying lonely deaths?

Fur farms promote inexcusable suffering, and it’s all about luxury garments that serve no real practical purpose. Stop the abuse and speak out for the ones without voices.
