Guys: Do Not Get Carried Away With Fashion

If there’s one thing men should stay away from, it’s fashion. They just don’t have the genetic makeup for it. That may sound like it’s something coming from a ‘male chauvinist pig, ‘ but it’s true. Women are born with a fashion sense. Men are not.

Having said that, there is one area of fashion where men seem to do alright. That’s in the area of wristwatches. Men are watch fetishists, just like women are shoe fetishists. That seems to make them good at choosing watches.

A men’s sport watch says a lot about the man wearing it. Besides telling the time, it tells anybody who happens to notice it much about the wearer’s favorite sports. If he’s into water sports, it will be waterproof. If he’s not really into water sports but wants you to think he is, it will be waterproof but totally impractical. Unless he’s a millionaire, no real sailor or surfer is going to spent thousands of dollars on a sports watch. It’s too much of a risk when a cheap one will do just fine.

Then there are watches with leather wristbands. A leather watch can be the fashion statement par excellence and amazingly, most men seem to know which ones are tasteful and which ones are not. Okay, it’s not that hard a decision: gold or silver for the timepiece and brown or black for the band. Still, very few men get it wrong when it comes to their wristwatches.

Shoes are another matter altogether. There’s nothing uglier than a pair of leather brown boots, but men everywhere wear them with pride. Somehow they think they make them look macho or something. They don’t, not unless they’re actually worn for doing something macho. Going out for Sunday brunch in a pair of boots just looks stupid. End of argument!

Remarkably, it is possible to make an even worse decision. Some men decide that since it’s Sunday, they have a right to wear their cheap flip-flops to Sunday brunch. How embarrassed their wives or girlfriends must be when they come walking into a nice restaurant with a man who is attracting attention to his ugly feet with his noisy sandals!

We won’t even go into the matter of clothing here. It’s just lucky that most men are so conservative. If you’re a man and you blend in with your work environment, it’s much better than if you stand out. Men who decide to lash out and try something different risk losing their jobs, their friends and maybe even their wives.

Stick with choosing your own watches guys – it’s safer. Let the girls have the fashions. They know what they’re doing.
